Why I Started Teaching People About Norwex

Posted on September 17, 2015

Six years ago I was looking at my children (ages 3 and 5 at the time – see how adorable?), and thinking about our family history of various autoimmune diseases. I really wanted to know if there was anything I could do to give them the best shot at growing up without chronic health problems.

Kids Tea Party

The list in our family was getting kind of long: allergiesasthmaCeliac diseaseJuvenile Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis – all stuff where our immune system attacks our own bodies. What was going on? A friend recommended the book The Autoimmune Epidemic. There were lots of eye-openers, but the biggest thing mentioned, that hadn’t been on my radar at all before, was basic household cleaning chemicals.

I had heard before that kids that grow up in cleaner homes have more allergies and asthma. The theory was that these kids just weren’t exposed to enough germs, so their immune systems got bored and started attacking themselves or something. Now we’re getting smarter and we realize it’s not the lack of exposure to germs, it’s the increased exposure to cleaning chemicals.

So I started looking for greener options. I got a book with recipes for making your own cleaners. Who was I kidding? I don’t even like to cook, so that solution wasn’t likely to sustain itself for long. I bought some more natural cleaners, but they just didn’t work very well. I don’t like cleaning anyway, so I didn’t have much patience with it taking longer. I kind of gave up and decided I would just clean less.

When my cousin started describing Norwex to me, I kind of blew her off, thinking, “Yeah, I’ve tried those green cleaners. No thanks.” Plus, I really didn’t want anything to do with a party business. I had tried one before and knew I was a lousy salesperson. It wasn’t until I saw her wipe butter off a mirror with just a cloth and water that I went, “Wait, what?? How did you do that??”

She sent me home with a set of the basic cloths to try, and I (the non-cleaner, remember?) deep-cleaned my kitchen for two and a half hours that night. It cleaned the grease/dust mixture from the top of our microwave. It was literally “squeaky” clean! Then I did the walls around the stove – WOW! I couldn’t believe how EASY this was. It seemed like magic. All I was using was just a wet cloth! It “looked” like a rag, but this thing was actually a high-tech cleaning power tool!

I realized I had found what I’d been looking for. Not only would this provide the safe haven I wanted for my kids, it actually made cleaning easier and faster!! Everyone I knew deserved to see this stuff in action. I realized the reason Norwex is sold in parties is that you really have to SEE a demo to get the power of the cloths. Cleaning with water doesn’t *sound* like it would work. You have to see it in action.

So I invited some friends over to show them what I’d found, and here we are! I had NO idea it would turn into a full-time income and a life mission for me, but that’s a whole other story… :-)

A Better Dishwashing Soap

Posted on August 29, 2015

I did some dishes by hand this morning, and realized a little while later that my hands didn’t feel all dry and scratchy like they used to after dishwashing. It has to be the new improved Norwex dishwashing liquid !

norwex dish soap

It makes sense. Most dishwashing liquids subject our hands to harsh chemicals – that’s how they get our dishes clean and make all those suds that we really don’t need. But Norwex’s formula is now greener and gentler to my hands. It is free from phthalates, SLS, SLES and dyes that can harm us with extended use and harm our rivers and lakes where they eventually end up. It still gives me suds and gets my dishes sparkling clean with no need to hand dry to avoid spots. I just leave them to drip dry on the super-absorbent Norwex dish mat. And, instead of perfume (fragrance which also has chemicals in it), it is scented with essential oil of Clementine for a crisp citrusy smell.

My hands love it, my dishes love it, my nose loves it, this is a NO BRAINER – it’s Norwex dish soap for me! And of course I use it together with our no-more-stinky dish cloth and our ThermoPlastic rubber bottle brush . Especially with the new extensions that were just released for the brush, I have the perfect tool for every job!

This is how you change the world

One of the highlights of our Norwex national conference was hearing from the founder of WashedAshore.org. Angela, a retired art teacher, talked about walking the beaches near her home seeking solace after the death of her husband. But instead of comfort, she found…garbage. She was shocked by the volume of trash she saw washed up on the shorelines and of course wanted to take action.

This is my favorite part of the story: Angela was wise enough to know that people aren’t inspired to take action when they are discouraged. She wanted to find a way to spread the message in an uplifting way. And wow, did she ever.

From their website: “…community members of all ages work together to clean up our beaches and process the debris into art supplies to construct giant sculptures of the sea life most affected by plastic pollution. This has resulted in thousands of pounds of debris removed from local beaches and turned into works of art…90% of the debris we collect is petroleum-based: plastic items, nylon ropes and net. We are able to use 98% of this trash to create sculptures, including a walk-through replica of an ocean gyre, a Styrofoam coral reef, Henry the fish, a plastic bottle sea jelly, an oil-spill replica, and a musical sea star…”

The results are stunningly beautiful. And as you take a closer look, hugely impactful.

How can we help?

  • Use less plastic! Lightweight items like plastic bottles, plastic bags, and plastic straws blow out of garbage cans and landfills and end up in our waterways, which bring them to the ocean. Filter your own water and use reusable bags and reusable straws .

Mom, I Want Norwex Water!

Posted on August 24, 2015

I’ll admit that at first glance, the Norwex Water Filtration System was the new product I was least excited about. I kind of groaned inside – “I’m not in the business of selling water pitchers. There are tons of those on the market already.”

But the more I learned, the more excited I got. And now after using it for a few weeks, I’m in LOVE. My kids love the taste of it, even my extra-sensitive son. When we travel, I have always let Blake pick out the brand of water jug we got in the store, because they all taste different to him! We’ve had a reverse osmosis system for twelve years, so I’ve felt good that we were getting rid of the bad stuff in our tap water, but I’ve also known that it leaves the water slightly acidic and without the good minerals. Now we drink delicious pH neutral water with Magnesium and other good stuff added back in! Win, win, win. So I’m a convert, big time!

Norwex Water System

This water filtration system with exclusive magnesium technology has become my go-to housewarming and get-well gift. And we will definitely be packing it in our suitcase so we don’t have to buy bottled water when we travel.

Did you know 60 MILLION plastic bottles end up in our landfills every single DAY? If you know anyone who buys bottled water, save them a whole lot of money (and give our planet a break!) by recommending the Norwex water pitcher to them!

Tired of your stinky old dish cloth?

Stinky Dish Cloth

No more stinky dishcloth!  That was always a pet peeve of mine, but with the Norwex dish cloth there is NO stinky smell!  That’s because the loosely woven 100% nylon mesh doesn’t harbor germs, odors or food particles. Everything just rinses away! It is perfect for scrubbing caked on food and sticky stuff from dishes and counters – anywhere scrubbing is needed it can get the job done. Best of all, it won’t scratch surfaces so it is even safe to use inside the microwave.

Ever get flour all over your counter when baking? Yeah, me too, and chased it around forever while it turned to paste. NOT ANYMORE!  This cloth just grabs it right up and voila! Clean counter. I have used it outside to get bugs off my windshield and the grill of my car too. It dries fast and is always ready to work when I am. I LOVE my dish cloth!  It even has my mom’s seal of approval as her favorite Norwex product.  She has given so many of them away as gifts!

Stinky Norwex Cloths?

Stinky Norwex Cloths

Because they look like rags, we sometimes forget that Norwex cloths are high-tech cleaning tools and need to be taken care of the way we care for other power tools!

Last week at a demo I met a woman whose cloths didn’t work as well after she washed them the first time, and she wasn’t happy with how her mop was picking up pet hair. Turns out she didn’t know that fabric softener clogs the cloths, and that the rubber brush recharges the dry mop pad. One of the main reasons we offer the education of in-person demos is so we can make sure you know how to keep these tools working well for you for years to come! They pick up so much grime for us, we have to know how to help them release that grime so they can work over and over and over.

The main instruction for use is to use only water!  The reason the cloths work so well is all those microscopic fibers grab everything on the surface and pick it up into the cloth.  If you were to use any kind of soap or cleaning product, it would make the cloth slip along the surface instead of being able to grab everything, so it wouldn’t work as well!  Plus, if soap gets deep into the fibers and doesn’t get rinsed out properly, it will block the BacLock self-purifying action and your cloths could get stinky.

Always follow the correct washing instructions.

After each use, scrub the cloth against itself under running water, rinse well, wring out, and hang to dry.  (Isn’t that EASY??)

About once a week, machine wash and dry, hot water is best, with three simple rules:

  1. No bleach
  2. No fabric softener
  3. No linty fabrics

The laundry detergent that will keep the cloths at their best for years to come is our Norwex Ultra Power Plus, now certified for High Efficiency machines! (It still works great in conventional machines also.)

If you ever end up with cloths that aren’t smelling clean, the best remedy is to soak them overnight in hot water and Norwex laundry detergent.  Then wash as normal.

If your cloths have gotten fabric softener on them, or you have hard water and minerals are building up in the cloths, you can choose to boil the cloths in a pot of hot water with some vinegar to help dissolve what’s trapped in the fibers.

Scary Facts About Plastic Water Bottles

Posted on October 20, 2014

These facts appeared in our Norwex consultant newsletter (because this is the kind of thing that gets us motivated!) and I just had to share:

Did you know…

  • More than 60 million plastic water bottles are discarded every DAY.  At best, they are ending up in landfills where they take up to 700 years to decompose.  Sadly, many of them end up as litter or in our lakes and rivers.
  • Just in North America, the plastic water bottles we use in a year require more than 15 MILLION barrels of oil for manufacturing, transport, and disposal.  That would fuel about 100,000 cars for a YEAR.
  • The energy used by consuming single-use plastic bottles could power 190,000 homes.
  • Recycling ONE plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to light a 60W bulb for 6 hours.
  • The Recycling Institute says only about one in six plastic bottles sold in North America is recycled.  That means, of every 60 million water bottles we use, 50 MILLION end up in landfills or as litter.

Are you moved to action?  Will YOU be the one making sure plastic bottles are recycled at your next family or company event?
